I originally decided to read Veronica Roth’s ‘Divergent’ because I had heard other students had enjoyed the book and I thought I would as well. Before beginning the book I had also enjoyed seeing the movie. The book holds my attention really well with constant conflict and action to keep it exciting. What also keeps the book interesting is that much of the social conflict is relatable which keeps me engaged. Once I finished the first book in the trilogy I completed the second book in two days and I am on to the third.
I do not have many curiosities about the author. I do however think that the struggles that are battled in the books may relate to her life. She uses a lot of descriptive detail when describing negative feelings and there is always a heavy presence of this in the text.
“Beatrice” or “Tris” is the main character throughout the Divergent trilogy. In the story people are grouped into factions based on skills and characteristics. She starts out in a generally peaceful and giving faction of society. Tris then leaves and moves onto a more rebellious faction which she trains with and learns their ways. What makes her different in this social system is that she is Divergent. This Divergence means that she doesn’t perfectly fit into any of the social classes. Also, the move from her previous faction to her new one was abnormal and made her stand out. Through a series of events a war breaks out and this faction system is abolished. During these times of conflict and action Tris has proved to be strong in dealing with the events happening around her. Tris is strong, however she does rely greatly on the encouragement and help of her friends. Her Divergence also made her someone that people looked at as a leader, though this is not a role that she is ready for or wants.
ReplyDeleteNow that I am further into the third book in the Divergent trilogy the storyline is changing more dramatically. A group a characters leave the others behind and find out information about themselves that they could not have imagined before. It makes the attitudes of the characters change in many ways. The characters realize that they have been in the dark about their whole lives for generations even before they were born. They begin to question everything they ever believed, did, or plan to do. This new found questioning of everything makes them very wary of authority and new people they are meeting because they are the same people that have been deceiving them for their whole lives.
ReplyDeleteThe characters have trouble trusting anyone because everything is new to them and they don't know what is true and what is false. This deep rooted deception in the books may be a clue about what the author has experience in her life.
Veronica Roth has a similar writing style throughout the Divergent trilogy, however in the third book she skips around to tell the story from two perspectives. Her writing is moderately descriptive but could definitely have more. It seems like sometimes there is a lot of description while in other instances there is very little. I think the author does a good job of describing the more important things and doesn't worry so much about others. There is also a decent amount of dialog, but not a whole lot. These aspects are probably done in order to make the books a quicker and easier read for younger audiences who don't want the books to drag on.
ReplyDeleteFor my author study visual I plan to create a poster displaying my information about Veronica Roth. A poster will be simple to create and it will be easy to display the works of Veronica Roth as well as facts about her life. Posters are also easy to walk up and look at for people to view.
ReplyDeleteOn the poster I can have all the works of Veronica Roth. I can also have her background information such as education there to view.
I don’t think that the author study helped me develop as a reader. The books I read did not have a difficult vocabulary so they went fairly quickly. Maybe a more difficult book would have helped to expand my vocabulary but these books did not. The Divergent series may have instigated some communication with other readers. Many people have read these books and could talk about them, and others still had seen the movies and could relate.
ReplyDeleteI did learn some things about my author and influences from her life in the text. I felt like the research aspect of this project was very unnecessary. We should not have separate due dates for bibliographies weeks ahead of time. If another source is needed later there is no way to add that source into the bibliography. Additionally, we are seniors, we should be able to manage turning everything in at once.
