Carley's Author Study on Cassandra Clare

I selected Cassandra Clare for a few reasons. One because I love her stories, they're so exciting to read.  Especially when Clary is first introduced to the world of Shadowhunters.  She's confused about why only she can see them. She's afraid because she just watched them kill the boy who let her into the club. Then she's unsure of herself when she watches the boy turn to dust, how does she explain that? Clary puts on a brave face in the end and when she realizes one of the Shadowhunters is following her a few days later she doesn't hesitate to confront him. I love this part as well because Jace gets introduced and Clary isn't portrayed as a damsel in distress. Most girls go running and look like lunatics screaming about someone no one else can see. Clary goes up to him and demands answers, not even worried that he might just kill her like the boy at the club.

The second reason is because The Mortal Instrument series was supposed to be a trilogy, but she continued to write more. That's the main reason I want to know more about this author. When an Author says it’s going to be a three book series, that's what it is. They don't continue with the same story, usually they start another story or a spinoff of the old one. I want to know why she continued The Mortal Instrument books. Did she feel the story wasn't complete? Did she just love the characters so much she wasn't ready to let it end? Did she think she left a lot of holes in the plot that needed to be filled? I do not know but I hope to find out.

  1. It's probably really cliché of me to say but the character that caught my attention is the main character, Clary. She stands out to me. She doesn't go by the definition of how girls act in most books. When she watches this boy be murdered by three; tatted, weapon ready, invisible teenagers she does try to explain it to the cops but is soon to realize that they can't help and leaves the scene. Then she realizes she's being stalked by one of the killers, she goes to him and demands answers. She's soon to find out that the event at the club is just the start of the crazy as she gets a frantic call from her mother. Clary acts on impulses, which is not always the best way to go but it's better then to sit at home letting everyone else fight her battles. She wants to fight her own battles, protect the ones she loves by herself, and not look for a knight to save her.

Her physical appearance also stood out to me. She's not wearing girly clothes. She's described as wearing sketchers, which is a brand no longer worn by any teenager. She wears hoodies, sweaters, and regular jeans. She's different then your average teenage girl. She's got brown hair, which she's not obsessed with. She doesn't care about her appearance. Clary stood out to me because of her difference from any other girl.

  3. The Mortal Instrument series is probably one of my favorite. I love the story line. It pulls you in, making it harder to put the book down. It always leaves me in suspense. I love all of the characters and their relationships with each other. I feel all of their emotions as I read. There are so many plot twists that you don't see coming, it's awesome. I hate knowing exactly what's to come, and with this series you believe that you do know until Clare throws another twist in the story line. I love reading Clary's adventures with her friends and family and what she does to save them all.

I think one thing that bothers me is a character named Sebastian. He's dark and creepy. The things he says and does is weird. I already know the truth about him and at one small part of the series I felt for him and thought he might really want to connect with people. Then he did something that just disgusted me all over again. Though some people may not feel the same. Sebastian is a main conflict but he's on a whole other level of disturbing.

  4. I want to be original and do a creative visual. I've thought about decorating a box, that spins, with information on each side. On the top of the box I want to have pictures of Cassandra Clare. I think any NOT FINISHED
