Justin Cox's Author Study on Martin Dugard and Bill O'Reilly

Justin’s Author Study #2

I picked John F. Kennedy from my author study book as a character who has caught my attention. This character is in the book called Killing Kennedy: The End of Camelot. In this book the authors give a great depiction of how they want President Kennedy to be portrayed. They describe him as a tall, young, handsome man who is a caring family man, and a great leader.  With the election over and Kennedy already sworn in as President of the Unites States, you begin to see another side of JFK. He begins to become more serious around his family. Before John would go out in the lawn and play with his dogs, and his young child. But now as he has started dealing with stress and the political issues in the 1960’s JFK has become a more mature man, rather than the young playful one, he was months before the election.

This brings JFK to life in this book. You never get inside of his head and know what he is thinking. Which I believe is a good thing. Not knowing his personal thoughts give him another distinction as a character. I believe it makes him more significant to the storyline and how the events happened in real life. It makes you feel as if you are there in the oval office with President Kennedy listing to the conversations he is having with his cabinet members. In the end Martin Dugard and Bill O’Reilly give a great depiction of who and what John F. Kennedy is.

  1. As I continued to read "Killing Kennedy", I found it to be a very well written historically accurate book. It provided me with information on the assassination and JFK's Presidency that I did not know before. I learned also a great deal more about JFK"s brothers and their role in his Presidency and after he was assassination. There is a lot more behind the scenes action then you would believe in a President's life.

Martin Dugard and Bill O'Reilly do a great job describing all the characters in this book. I believe that it was the depiction of the characters and the in depth detail about the events that transpired within JFK's Presidency. I would recommend this book to any one who is interested in politics, history, or any other historical events. It is truly a great read.

  2. As I finished "Killing Kennedy" and began to read "Killing Lincoln", I noticed a very similar writing style of Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard. These two structure sentences and paragraphs very unique to their style of writing. They construct their writing very informational, but they don't give many things away which makes you keep reading on furthermore into the book. Another reason that is uniquely their writing style is how they flip flop between events, an example is how they switch between President Lincoln and John Wilkes Boothe before the assassination.

These two have a very unique and exclusive writing style to them their own. It gives you a great feel and makes you want to keep reading all the way through the book. Its a very creative a fun writing style.

  3. The plan for my visual is a bit different than how others will present their visual. I will be presenting mine like a poll booth. You have two candidates; Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard. I will be describing the difference between the tow Authors and how they made their similarities work within the two novels that I read.

The process by witch I thought of this idea was stemmed from the two presidents that were discussed in this novel.

  4. The pros and cons for the Author Study assignment are as follows, the author study reading helps you develop your thought process and intellectual thinking as a reader. Also it helps you beginning to communicate with others about the reading or the topic of the reading. Some cons would be that reading similar genres of books can only make you knowledgeable in one topic of society.

Learning about a specific author has its pros and cons, you will only learn one authors styles and writing techniques, but you also become fluent in that authors writing style and begin to interpret everything better. This also presents organizational skills to be prepared to always be ready to do an assignment involved with the author study. Overall it is a great project.
