Anouk O Author Study on Cassandra Clare

The reason I chose Cassandra Clare for my author study is because I was already reading the Mortal Instruments series. I started reading the series after I saw the movie the Mortal Instruments. I really liked the storyline, because it is not a typical storyline. It is about shadow hunters that are trying to kill all the demons in the world. The only thing is that humans can’t seem them. You can only see them when you are a shadow hunter yourself. There is a lot of action in the book, and that is what keeps me interested in the storyline. A lot of different things happen, and there is never a boring moment in the storyline. Also, I really liked Clare’s writing, because she describes her characters in detail. You know a lot about how the characters look, how they feel, and how they live. I think it is more fun to read a book when you know a lot about the characters, because you can imagine them in your own head.

The questions I have right now are: why did Clare choose to write the series the Mortal Instruments? How did she come up with the storyline? How did she come up with the characters? I always wonder how authors can come up with their story lines and what is going on in their head. I really look up to authors, because they can just come up with a story and put that on paper. I would like to learn if it’s maybe something that happened in the author’s life that they come up with the stories, or if they just have a big imagination. The other thing I am wondering right now is: what is going to happen in the series? I am reading the third book right now, and I have two more books to go. So much is happening in every book that I am just wondering what is going to happen in the next two books.

  1. Clary Fray is one of the main characters in the series the Mortal Instruments. In the books she is described as having long, curly red hair, freckles, and bright green eyes. She is a small and thin girl, and she is often seen younger than her actual age. In the first book she is described as being an ordinary human, but later on she discovers she is actually a shadowhunter, a human with angelic qualities. Her mother kept it a secret, because of many reasons. She falls in love with Jace, but in the first book they are told they are brother and sister. They are both devastated by this information, but later on in the series they learn they are actually not related. Clary is a very stubborn girl, and this can be good and bad. She always does stuff without really thinking about it or listening to other people. This can bring her in dangerous situation, but it can also help her solving problems.
I really connect to Clary, because her thoughts are described in detail. You always know how she is feeling and what she is thinking. This helps to make a good connection with the reader and the character. Clary is really important in the storyline, because everything that is happening is happening basically because of her. She discovers she is a shadowhunter, her dad is trying to take over the shadowhunter world, her mom gets kidnapped, etc. All the major things that are happening in the books are somehow connected to Clary.

  2. What I really like about Clare is that she can write 5 books in one series and the books don't get boring. Sometimes when an author writes too many books in the same series it can start to drag on and it's not fun anymore to read the books. Clare is doing a really good job of keeping the series interesting. I am reading the 4th book right now and the storyline is still really exiting. Something happens at every moment in the book and she keeps you on the edge of your chair.
The thing I also really like about this series is that in the 4th book she focusses a little bit more on different characters than just the two main characters. She writes a lot about Simon now, how he is feeling and what he is doing/thinking. Clare is really good at describing her characters, and she really sucks you into them. So far, I am really enjoying the books and I don't want them to end. I wonder what is going to happen in the 4th book and how she will finish the series.

  3. Clare's style of writing is different than other books because she is writing about something that does not exist. The serie The Mortal Instruments are in the genre urban fantasy, She is writing about shadowhunters that have an own world and they have a different way of living. She uses a lot of Latin phrases and words, because the shadowhunters use Latin a lot. Also, there are a lot of action scenes in the book, so Clare has a way of writing to make the scenes more exciting and the words and sentences she uses sucks you into the scene.

Clare uses a lot of description; she describes her characters, the places and all of the scenes in detail. You can imagine what's going on because she describes everything in such detail that you can imagine it in your own mind. Also, her audience is teens and young adults. She kept in mind that she has a younger audience, so she uses easier words and her sentences are not too long.
The other things she does in writing in third person point of view, but it changes between characters. The whole story is not just from one person's point of view, it changes every scene who's point of view it is. Another thing about her style of writing is that she uses a lot of dialogue, but she also describes the surroundings in detail.
Her style of writing makes the mood of the book very exciting and you just want to keep reading and reading. The words and phrases she uses sets the theme of the book and that is the shadowhunters fighting against the demons and the evil in the world. Her style separates the good and the evil.

  4. First of all, I am going to gather information and answer my working question: why did Clare decide to write the Mortal Instruments and how did she come up with the storyline? Once I have answered my working question I can start working on my visual. I want visual to be something mysterious because the books are about something supernatural and Clare loves to write about supernatural stuff. During the story the environment felt kind of gloomy and dark, that's why I want my visual to be gloomy and dark so that it feels like you are actually in the story. I am probably going to use a shoebox or some kind of box for this so when you look into the box it will have a gloomy and dark environment.
I think this kind of visual will best convey my peers because they will understand a little bit better what's going on in the Mortal Instruments series. I will be able to tell my story and answer my working question if I use a big paper to explain what is going on, and on the outside/inside of the box I will show my vision of the books and how I think the environment will look and how Clare came up with the series.
So my visual will be a big piece of paper where I will answer my working question on and show all the phases of the project. The other part will be a box which I am going to use to show the environment of the story.

  5. My thoughts about the author study assignment are that I enjoyed reading the books and I liked it because it made me think more about the author and the books. Without this assignment I would have never known why the author decided to write the novels and how she came up with the idea. I would never look up these answers if I was just reading a book. The same questions will still come up in my mind but I would be to lazy to look up the answer.
There are many pros and cons to this assignment. It helps you develop as a reader because you have to read at least two books. The only thing about this point is that a lot of people probably don't read their books. I did read my books because I enjoy reading. I think the assignment doesn't really make you communicate about reading with others. I never talked to anyone about reading during the assignment. At the end you also don't have to communicate because you put all your thoughts in a visual. The assignment does teach you more about a specific author because your working question has something to do with your author and you do research about your author. At last, the assignment does improve your research and organization skills because you have to do find the answer to your working question and that includes doing research. Also, you have to organize your thoughts and answers in a visual so that improves your organization skills.
