Svetlana E's Author Study on Paolo Bacigalupi

I chose this author for the author study because he writes about some strange things. One of the strange things in both of my books that I am reading  is a guy named Tool. Tool is part human and part animal; he is a genetically altered human. He has the DNA of several animals. And each book contains kids that are having troubled lives, and somehow one way or another Tool is there. One thing that I find interesting about this author and his writing is that in both of his books he has a character named Tool, and I feel like Tool somehow is a main character even if he doesn’t talk much about him. The two books that I am reading are called The Drowned Cities and Ship Breaker.
The author tends to write about things that actually could happen, but at the same time are fiction. What I mean by that is in the book “Ship Breaker” there is a kid named Nailer; he and his crew break down old ships that are no longer working. Nailer went deep into the ship to find some things but slips and falls. He tries to swim, but it was difficult because he fell in several gallons of oil. He calls out for help, but no one hears him. Later on a crew member finds him, but won’t help him. Later on he manages to get out, and everyone starts to call him Lucky Boy. There are other things that should have ether killed him or close to it, but somehow he keeps on being “Lucky”. And later on in the book you get to see Tool. Tool is described the same way as in the book The Drowned Cities. He is depicted as a beast; he has sharp animal like teeth, a small muzzle, his eyes depict that of an animal, he has long nails, and he growls and snarls like an animal.

  1. A character that has grabbed my attention in this book is a guy named Tool. Tool is a genetic mutation between and human and several animals. Tool is located in the two books that I am reading, and I guess that is why I find him to be interesting. Tool has a body of a human, but his facial parts are different. He has a small muzzle, his eyes are sharp and keen as a dogs. He has really good hearing, he has long nails that can cut one pretty badly, and he acts like an animal sometimes. Tool can act like an animal sometimes, but when he is around someone who he can trust he lowers his guard and acts like a normal human, he still growls here and there though. In one of the books he acted like he liked “liked” someone and so he was kind and nice to that person.
I connect to this character because when I was younger I used to act like an ‘animals’ sometimes, of course I have changed. I feel like this character is really important because he has been in two different books. In both books he has been described the same, as an animal that works for other who can pay him with what he wants. And in both books he helped out kids that needed his help, in return they helped him out in a way of some sorts. In some way I can tell that he is a very important character.

  2. I stopped reading the Drowned Cities book only to try and finish reading Ship Breaker. Since Ship Breaker is a smaller book than the Drowned Cities I thought that I would be able to finish that book faster. I am right, I am almost done with the book.
The characters in the book Ship Breaker are trying to protect a girl who is wealthier than them. She is a lot wealthier than them. There was a huge storm that required everyone to leave their homes because the storm created huge tides that washed some of the homes away. The storm also washed up the girl and her personal ship on land. Nailer and his friend where looking around for food when they stumbled on to the ship. They entered the ship and found a lot of people who worked their dead, they found everything one the floor that used to be up on the walls or on the shelves.
They went into one of the rooms and found the girl who had several furniture’s on top of her. Nailer and his friend found this girl and pushed everything off of her. When they pulled the stuff off, they found out that she had diamonds, gold and other expansive stuff on her. Nailer’s friend wanted to take the stuff off of her so they could become rich. They thought that the girl was dead, but Nailer saw that her eyes were moving and decided to help the girl out. They helped the girl out of the ship, they tried to help her out.
Nailer and his friend were staying close to the ship trying to protect it from anyone who might want to steal it, they also stayed close to the girl. She told them that since she hasn’t reported back to her base that something had to go wrong and that her father would come looking for her. She said that she would be worth more alive than dead.
Later on in the day the kids heard some people approach their location and they found out that it was Nailer’s dad and his crew, amongst the group there was Tool. The father found the kids and tried to kill the girl for her wealth, he was stopped by his own son. Nailer told him that if he were to keep her live that they would get paid more than what she has on her. So the father listened to his son and kept the girl alive, but now they have to come up with a plan on how they found the girl and all the wealth.

  3. Paolo Bacigalupi writes his novel Ship Breaker from the third-person limited-omniscient perspective. This is done because the novel takes place at an unknown date in the future, and much is to be explained about the way the world differs from the one in which the reader exists. A third-person narrator, who acts as a guide of sorts, and recounts a story and historical events, allows the reader to understand the world in which Nailer exists.
The way he writes is similar in the two of the books that I am reading. I have found out that the Ship Breaker is the second book from the Drowned Cities. The way he writes is he uses small words, but sometimes he adds bigger and complex words. In both of the books he writes in the third person. He writes so that younger kids may understand, but he keeps it intriguing by adding bigger words.

  4. I will create a prezi for my author study. i will create prezi because i would have no time to create a solid visual. So to make things easier to me, i have decided to do a prezi. I chose prezi as well because for most of my classes i am on my laptop at home and it will make it easier for me to go on prezi and to create my presentation.

I feel like the research was ok. Finding the research was difficult to find. I wondered why my author wanted to write a sequel to a book that i am reading. In fact i am reading both books, but know where on the books does he say that this book is a sequel to... and or does it say there is a sequel to this book called...

  5. The pros of doing this assignment is that we get to learn more about our author and why did write about what they write. I really in joyed finding out why my author wrote about dystopias, and what motivated him. The cons of this project is that we had to do a project, instead of making a 3D project, i just in joyed making an online project.

Doing this project i was able to read more than i usually do. i think that was because i HAD to read instead of doing it on my own. i was also able to like that books that i was reading and would recommend it to people who like to read what i like reading. And i would encourage others to read because then you can become more creative, and studies show that if you are creative you tend to live a better life.

This assignment also made me think about other authors that are almost like the author i did the study on. I will be looking out for more kinds of those authors that are like Paolo Bacigalupi. This assignment also helped me on being more creative on when it comes to finding out information, i am able to be a more effective researcher and plus this assignment also helped me with trying to be more organized.
