John R.'s Thoughts on James Patterson

I chose to read books by James Patterson for my author study reading assignment because I started reading Private by. him last year.  Due to lack of time I never got to finish reading the novel, although I really enjoyed the mystery genre in which he writes and how he develops the plot with every chapter being in a different point of view.  In one chapter you can read of the murderer going about in their daily life, preparing to commit the crime, and then committing the murder in detail from inception to execution, while in the next chapter you can read of the detectives investigating the crime.  I thought this was interesting because I do not believe I have never read a book written in this style where you are aware the events that have unfolded but the protagonist is still struggling to understand what occurred, while the antagonist is trying to keep it all a secret.  I think it is a very interesting plot.

I am interested in discovering how James Patterson got his start as an author and his process for developing characters in his novel.  I am curious to discover if the author models any of his characters such as Jack Morgan off of traits and ideas that he personally possesses or that he wishes he could possess. I would be interested in discovering if James Patterson is also a good at putting the pieces of the puzzle together in his own life and if he is as big of a hot shot ladies man he attempts to portray.

  1. Jack Morgan the protagonist in Private by James Patterson caught my attention because he is a very hardcore character. He is a Marine who formerly served in Afghanistan having survived a helicopter crash. Jack is a very strong minded detective who is not afraid to break the rules a little if he feels it is for the best and beneficial to advancing his investigation. He is also a noticeably confident individual when it comes to conducting his investigations among dangerous criminals and also in his love life with long time lover and secretary Colleen Molloy.

Jack is important to this storyline because he is the owner and lead detective at Private, a private investigation firm that conducts investigations of maximum discretion and force. Jack is important to the storyline of this story because he sets the rules of conduct that makes his detectives and company so successful. Because Private is a private firm, they do not have to follow all the legal procedures that sworn law enforcement officers must follow, which allows them to conduct some questionable tactics of interrogation and obtaining information. I connect to this character because he is very persistent and achieving his goals by any means necessary. He is also a retired United States Marine which is truly respectable and a title I hope to someday obtain.

  4. I believe James Patterson writes using a lot of description throughout his although it is not always too thorough. He is known to write very conversional with lots of dialogue. This creates a very real conversional story that grabs and holds the reader’s attention as if they were eavesdropping in the characters’ lives. Patterson also tries to appeal to his target audience of young adults and late adults by depicting a common theme of crime, deception, and adultery, which resonates much interest in his writing.
Patterson writes in many different points of view including first person, second person, and third person omniscient, alternating every chapter. He illustrates the story through the point of view of the protagonist, dives deep into lives and trials of his colleagues, and hovers over crime and deception of the killers within the novels. This approach to creates a mood of suspense while reading his writing, bringing the reader along for the ride while the characters are trying bring justice to the city of Los Angeles from the killers and cheats that lurk around every corner.

  6. My plans for my author study visual for my author James Patterson are still in development since I recently had to change my working question. My working question is currently, "How does James Patterson's life affect his writing, and how might he in turn hope to affect the lives of his readers?" My plan for the development of my author study visual is to utilize a trifold board.

Using a trifold board, I will introduce and organize the different aspects of the project on seperate folds. Information such as why I selected my author and books, how or why I chose a working question, and how I searched for answers to that question, will all be organized on one section of the trifold. The next section will have information biographical on the author I chose, James Patterson, as well as a picture and the books I read. The last section will contain my working question and the results I found through my research.

  7. I believe the Author Study assignment helped me to develop as a reader because it required me to read at least two books during second semester English. It helped to keep me motivated and reading on my free time in order to to have the knowledge to complete my weekly blog post. I enjoyed having time during class to read a book by an author of my choice and being able to about one of my favorite authors by analyzing their writing and life.

This assignment fostered research and organizational skills because I had to keep my thoughts organized in order to apply them to my author study responses and also got to use and improve my research skills by allowing me to research my author and decipher useful information. It encouraged me to communicate with others about reading through the use of online blog post that others could view and comment on. I also enjoyed reading other people's blog post and learning about the novels they read and their authors.
